SimCity 5 (2013) Free Game Now Available, Mac OS X Version Still “MIA”

Amid all the controversy surrounding EA’s strategy simulation game SimCity 5, or SimCity 2013, the company has open gates of free games for aspiring mayors. Meanwhile, Amazon is selling the game again on its website, but the Mac OS X version is still not available, even for pre-order.

Article written by Carlo Raphael Diokno — As compensation, Electronic Arts starts giving away free games for players of the new SimCity 5 (2013).

On PC Origin version, users are welcomed with an extra window with link to the free game catalog. The feature window said, “You expect better. So do we.” EA also announced the availability of free game catalog for SimCity players on its official blog.
The Maxis Team wrote:
Our SimCity Mayors are incredibly important to the team at Maxis. We sincerely apologize for the difficulties at launch and hope to make it up to you with a free PC game download from Origin.
Players of SimCity 5 can claim their free game by clicking the featured window. The catalog includes top games such as Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Bejeweled 3, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Dead Space 3, Plants vs Zombies and the older but still cool SimCity 4 “Deluxe Edition” Set with includes the Rush Hour expansion.

In related news, Amazon starts selling SimCity 5 again and it signals stability of SimCity 5′s servers. However, Amazon (or Origin) is still not accepting pre-orders for the SimCity Mac OS X version. The native SimCity Mac variant is expected to arrive this Spring, but it looks like EA is not ready to accommodate new players yet — even by the end of April.

On Twitter, a SimCity player asked if the Mac version “will be out before the end of April,” and Maxis responded with incomplete detail that “(the) Mac version will be released later this Spring.”

Electronic Arts said SimCity’s launch is very successful despite the highly publicized server issues.
Peter Moore, COO of EA said that 44 percent of SimCity buyers chose Origin and downloaded the game online. With the help of Origin, also available on Mac OS X, Electronic Arts has sold more than 1.3 million copies worldwide.

Electronic Arts and Maxis also confirmed that improvements on server infrastructure is ongoing and optimization will continue to improve possibly until the launch of the SimCity Mac variant.
