Neo Victorian Cell Phone 3

It’s nearly impossible at this point not to know what Steampunk is. From the depths of science fiction arose a fashion trend that now and then makes its way into the mainstream. Steampunk harkens back to a fictional time where most of our technology was powered by steam. It’s a blend of old school and futuristic. The typical steampunk outfit involves a lot of brown, a lot of gears, and a lot of pocket watches.

There have been steampunk computers, steampunk guitars, and even steampunk gaming systems. Of course, not a lot (if any) function are added to the designs, but they look cool. No one knows how to make something both functional and cool looking more than Poland based artist J. Redmer. As the creator of some gorgeous pieces, he knows how to bring an antique beauty and place it comfortably in something completely modern. He has created gorgeous wrist watches, lamps, clocks, radios, and stereo systems. One of his latest projects was creating a fully functional “antique” cell phone. The phone is gorgeous and was designed to resemble the Neo-Victorian aesthetic. The movement combines Victorian and Edwardian styles and celebrates the old and ornate.

The phone was created by modifying a Sagem X-5m cell phone. A handmade wooden case houses the vital parts of the cell phone, giving it a bulky, but still small, shape. Instead of buttons, the phone features brass pieces for dialing. The phone, however, retains its LED screen and the green glow of a modern cell phone. It’s visually stunning and still loads more practical than the brick phones of the 90s. Those addicted to smart phones and blackberries may never take an interest, but it’s a lovely (if not exactly pocket-sized) phone for those who need less. Unfortunately, it is J. Redmer’s first and maybe only cell phone creation and its charger only works with European outlets.
