New Acer Laptop Looks Like the Enterprise From 'Star Trek'

Acer is holding an event on May 3 called "Redefining the computing experience." What's in store is anyone's guess, but the company is hoping to capitalize on the hype for the upcoming movie Star Trek: Into Darkness to generate interest in its new products via this ad.

What will the product be? Clearly, it's a Windows 8 laptop of some kind, although not like any we've ever seen yet — and that's saying something. The hybrid has display attached to an arm, which gives the screen another degree of freedom in its motion — allowing it to extend away from the keyboard similar to a standalone monitor.

And yes, as the product's "trailer" is clearly trying to convey, the design is somewhat reminiscent of the way the primary circular hull of the starship Enterprise extends over and above the cylindrical secondary hull. Kinda-sorta, anyway.

As for the name, features and any other details of the product, we'll have to wait 'til May 3, but Acer's put up a teaser site in the meantime. Star Trek doesn't arrive in theaters until May 17, but it's unlikely the laptop will make an appearance — unless Capt. Kirk and crew take a time warp back to the 21st century.
