Windows Phone outships iPhone in some countries

Windows Phone is outshining the iPhone in several countries. But relax, Apple, there is an explanation.
In a blog posted Tuesday, Microsoft corporate communications VP Frank Shaw cited an IDC report revealing that Windows Phone has reached 10 percent market share in a number of countries. Along with that milestone, Windows Phone has outshipped Apple's iPhone in seven markets across the globe.
Shaw didn't divulge the names of those seven markets. But IDC did and explained why Windows Phone has a foothold in those regions.

Speaking with The New York Times yesterday, IDC analyst Kevin Restivo said that fourth-quarter Windows Phone shipments surpassed those of the iPhone in Argentina, India, Poland, Russia, South Africa, and the Ukraine. The seventh market actually lumps together several smaller countries, such as Croatia, and is collectively known as "the rest of central and eastern Europe."

Further, the Ukraine, South Africa, and "the rest of central and eastern Europe" are small markets where Windows Phone shipments numbered less than 100,000 during the fourth quarter.
Windows Phone also has a leg up in markets where Nokia already is popular, the analyst added. In many of those countries, iPhone demand is weaker because of the high cost of the phone and the absence of carrier subsidies.

Finally, IDC used the term "shipped" in the report. But "shipped" doesn't mean "sold." Retailers in those markets may be receiving more Windows Phone devices. But the question, as always, is: how many of those devices are being scooped up by consumers?

iPhone 5S expected to launch late June

Apple will likely bring out its next iPhone in late June, projects Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.
Assuming that forecast comes true, Munster believes Apple will sell 4 million units of the new phone before the month and the quarter are over. That estimate compares with the 5 million iPhone 5 handsets sold during that model's opening weekend.

The analyst expects Apple to sell 30 million iPhones over the June quarter, a 15 percent increase over the same quarter a year ago.

What will the iPhone 5S offer over its predecessor?
Like most analysts and Apple watchers, Munster expects the phone to include a faster processor, better camera, and new software features tied into the hardware. He thinks there's an "outside chance" the 5S may come with an NFC (near-field communications) chip to open the door for mobile payments.

Apple's purchase last year of security technology provider AuthenTec could lead to a biometric security feature, aka fingerprint reader, for the 5S. But the analyst thinks such a feature is more likely to debut with the iPhone 6.

A follow-up act from Apple will come in the September quarter when the analyst expects to see the launch of the much-rumored low-cost iPhone. Targeted for emerging markets, a budget iPhone would help Apple tap into a market for low-cost smartphones that would be valued at around $135 billion in total. Munster pegs the unlocked price of a low-cost iPhone at $250.
Finally, Apple could announce its new television sometime in the December quarter, according to Munster, ultimately followed by the announcement of a smartwatch.
The analyst doesn't think either product would generate substantial revenue. But they would show that Apple is still capable of cooking up innovative products, something that would benefit the company and its stock price.

"We believe investors have wondered if Apple can put out new and innovating products without Steve Jobs," Munster said in an investors note released today. "We believe that ultimately, if Apple is viewed as a company that can innovate, the multiple will improve."

Britney Spears Bikini: Singer's Body Looks Unbelievable In Tiny Two-Piece

A new relationship sure does Britney Spears' body good.
On Monday, the 31-year-old pop superstar was photographed hanging out outside a friend's house in sunny Malibu, Calif., wearing nothing but a tiny two-piece.

Spears looked unbelievable in the striped strapless bikini, flaunting the abs that first made her famous nearly 15 years ago. The bronzed beauty, who recently dyed her blond locks brunette, was later photographed smoking a cigarette.

Absent was her new boyfriend, David Lucado, a 27-year-old Atlanta native whom she was first linked to last month.

Spears and Lucado were spotted holding hands on Friday in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Thousand Oaks, Calif., according to Us Weekly. On Sunday, Spears tweeted a photo of her, Lucado and manager Larry Rudolph at the Cirque du Soleil "One Drop" show in Las Vegas.

Spears will show off her amazing bod once more on an upcoming cover of Shape magazine.

Will the iPhone 5 Feature an Apple A6 Processor

We've come to expect Apple to launch new and improved mobile processors in iPads lately, then move them over to the iPhone. Well if the photo below is for real, the iPhone 5 will feature an A6 processor, one step ahead of the A5X found in the Retina display iPad.

The image was picked up by AppleInsider and is poor quality. With some enhancement, the A6 marking can clearly be seen on what is purported to be the iPhone 5 logic board. If authentic, the image is the first to leak of the next generation iPhone processor.

The logic board looks real enough, although the picture was obviously snapped from some kind of computer display. There has been speculation that the upcoming A6 would feature a quad-core processor. The A5 dual-core made headlines when it was discovered to be installed in the Apple TV with one of the cores essentially switched off.

In any case, the iPhone 5 is expected to contain an updated quad-core ARM processor based on Samsung's Exynox 4. Whether or not this chip is branded the A6 remains to be seen. The Retina iPad was expected to debut with an A6, however Apple launched the device with an A5X, which improved the graphics capabilities of the A5 without a complete redesign.

All eyes are on Apple's upcoming media event September 12, where the company is expected to announce the iPhone 5 and reveal a smaller iPad model.

iPhone 5 Begins Production as Hardware Details Leak

China Times reports that the iPhone 5 has entered a trial production phase and will feature a larger screen. Purported iPhone 5 parts have already leaked that seem to match the claim of a four-inch screen. The iPhone 5 itself is expected to have a similar form factor as the current model, with the display reaching all the way to the edge of the device.

The rendering above by Piotrek Photos shows how a larger iPhone 5 screen might compare to the current iPhone 4 display. This news comes as the New York Times has confirmed Apple is working on near-field communication (NFC) technology so that future iPhones can easily make wireless mobile payments at specially equipped cash registers. The NFC hardware would be integrated with the iPhone processor and linked directly to the owner's iTunes account.

Although Apple is working on NFC technology it's not clear whether or not the feature will make its way onto the iPhone 5. The company could be saving this functionality for a future model iPhone, as there are many different versions of the e-wallet concept currently entering the market. Competing Android phones are already getting into the act, with the Samsung Nexus S already equipped with NFC.

Other highlights of the iPhone 5 design include the switch to a metal back, much like the original iPhone. Apple could completely redesign the iPhone 5 with a curved aluminum back, to bring it more in line with the iPad 2 and recent iPod touch designs. More recent information points to a next generation device much more similar to the iPhone 4, except replacing the back glass panel with metal. A redesigned antenna would be integrated into the smartphone to help prevent the reception issues that were cited by Consumer Reports when they refused to recommend the iPhone 4.

According to China Times, the iPhone 5 is on track for a summer 2011 release. This contradicts some reports that the iPhone 5 could be delayed until September. Apple typically updates the iPhone every year in late June to early July. Plenty of time left for more rumors, leaks and speculation before an official Apple announcement.
