TheNewYorkTimes / U.S. - Apr 25, 2013 - 15:04:07 - 171 words

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Rain that moved across the Midwest in the past week helped ease drought conditions for some farmers, but not everyone, according to the latest drought monitor report released

Thursday. The report from the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln said the rain that caused flooding in some areas of the Midwest helped decrease the drought area from the upper Midwest into the western corn belt and central portions of the Rockies and Great Plains. The drought monitor report, which measures conditions for the seven days up to Tuesday...

Amazon sales rise but profits fall

Online retailer Amazon saw a fall in profits but rising sales in the first three months of the year.
But sales of digital content helped boost revenues for the quarter by 22% to more than $16bn.
Its gross profit margin - a closely-watched measure by investors - also increased to 26.6%, from 24% a year ago.

In recent months, Amazon has been investing heavily in building new warehouses to improve delivery times, as well as launching new products such as its Kindle range and online film and video content.
Analysts say its strategy is to ensure longer-term success at the cost of short-term profits.

Mystery Of The 25-Foot Ancient Spiral-Toothed Shark Solved

Brett Smith for redOrbit.com – Your Universe Online
Imagine a 25-foot-long shark, but instead of having a typical set of jaws, it packs a chainsaw-like ‘tongue’ full of razor-sharp teeth ready to slash through prey with ease.
While it sounds like something straight out of a Killer B Movie, it is anything but.
A group of American researchers has described just such a creature that lived about 270 million years ago based on the animal’s fossilized spiral set of teeth.

According to their report in the journal Biology Letters, the research team used CT scans and computer modeling to recreate the ancient predator, which once inhabited the waters around modern-day Idaho.
Known as a Helicoprion, the fish is probably more closely related to modern chimeras, or ratfish, than today’s sharks. Since their skeletons were mostly cartilage, the fossil record of the fish is quite limited.
The most prevalent fossil is also the Helicoprion’s most notable feature – its spiral set of teeth known as a ‘whorl.’ These structures have fascinated paleontologists for decades, but the scientific community had never pieced together how the structure fit into the animal’s physiology.
“We were able to answer where the set of teeth fit in the animal,” said the study’s lead author Leif Tapanila, a natural history professor at Idaho State University’s [ISU] Earth Sciences Division. “They fit in the back of the mouth, right next to the back joint of the jaw. We were able to refute that it might have been located at the front of the jaw.”

To reconstruct the ancient beast, the team used the most complete whorl fossil in their collection. Discovered in Idaho, the fossil measures 9 inches, contains 117 individual teeth and includes impressions of the cartilage that held the structure in place. The researchers were able to analyze deep inside the fossil using CT scans.
“When we got the images back, we could easily see that we had the upper and lower jaw of the animals, as well as the spiral of teeth,” Tapanila told BBC Nature. “For the first time we were able to very clearly image how that spiral of teeth relates to the jaw.”

Tapanila said try to imagine having a spiral set of teeth attached to the back of your lower jaw.
“Only maybe a dozen teeth are poking up out of your lower jaw so you can bite,” he said. “The rest of those teeth are stored inside and are not being used, those are your baby teeth – the teeth you had when you were younger.”

The team then used 3-D computer modeling to illustrate how the jaw might have been used.
“As the mouth closes, the teeth spin backwards… so they slash through the meat that they are biting into,” Tapanila said. “The teeth themselves are very narrow: nice long, pointy, triangular teeth with serrations like a steak knife.”
“As the jaw is closing and the teeth are spinning past whatever it’s eating, it’s making a very nice clean cut,” he added.

Based on the condition of the teeth fossils, the team also concluded that the Helicoprion probably ate soft-bodied fish and avoided ancient turtle or shellfish.
“If this animal were eating other animals that were very hard or [had] hard armor plating or dense shells, you would expect more damage to their teeth,” Tapanila said. “This leads us to believe that our animal was probably eating soft, squishy things like calamari. It was probably eating squid or its relatives that were swimming in the ocean at the time.”

Iron Man 3 is fresh, ferrous fun, but should you see it in 3D

After the snooze-fest sequel, we weren't expecting much from a third Iron Man outing -- especially one that had to follow the hero-packed Avengers Assemble.
Thankfully though some fresh ideas make the step-down to just a single superhero an easy one to bear, and prove that the repetitive process of sequel-making doesn't have to feel repetitive to the audience.
Note: The following contains very mild spoilers. We wouldn't dare give away any serious movie surprises, but if you want to go into Iron Man 3 knowing as little about the film as possible, skip ahead to the section below, '2D or not 2D'.

Indeed, the smartest move Marvel's latest movie makes is acknowledging that post-Avengers, there's no going back to the cheery, simple, superhero jollies of yesteryear. Having voyaged through a wormhole and stared a galactic god in the face, Iron Man 3 finds the once-irrepressible Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) plagued by insomnia, and prone to panic attacks if he dwells on the New York alien assault, or finds himself too far from his all-important suit.

Hounded out of his emotional and physical safe-zone by the maniacal Mandarin -- played to absolute perfection by Sir Ben Kingsley -- Stark is forced to bolt himself back together, a process that ditches sky-spanning dust-ups in favour of claustrophobic diner brawls and low-tech infiltration. Witty lines throughout and one completely unexpected turn are the icing on the cake, resulting in a blockbuster sequel that, against impossible odds, manages to surprise.

The Iron Man suit meanwhile has been tweaked, in a canny move that makes for more interesting on-screen action. Rather than a being single hunk of metal, the third film's suit bolts onto Stark in pieces, so you'll see him fighting the forces of evil with just an Iron fist, or one Iron arm and an Iron leg.
When the action eventually becomes more grandiose, director Shane Black gets creative with this limb-popping trick. It keeps the fights feeling fresh, and gives Downey Jr. more screen time.

The film is far from perfect, with an opening half-hour that's low on excitement, and some glaring -- and often baffling -- product placement (seriously, how did Speedtest.net get squeezed into this movie?). It's still good fun though, with some laugh-out-loud moments and some creative comic-book action.

2D or not 2D?

So, is Iron Man 3 worth seeing in 3D? I saw the movie in three dimensions in ideal settings -- a central seat at a massive screen in the Odeon in London's Leicester Square -- and didn't think the 3D added much to the movie.
That said, the 3D itself is very good, with nothing popping out or dipping into the screen more than it should. This is particularly impressive because Iron Man 3 wasn't shot in 3D, but post-converted, a process that often results in ropey visuals and jarring depth mistakes.

Unlike the simply gorgeous Life of Pi, 3D doesn't bring anything extra to Iron Man 3, and there's no sense that it was written, directed or imagined with added visual depth in mind. Having donned my daft 3D spectacles at the start of the film, I stopped noticing the effect entirely after only a few minutes.
That speaks to the subtlety of the film's 3D efforts, but also means there's no added value in a 3D viewing, especially as tickets for these triple-dimensional screenings are more expensive.
Ultimately I'd recommend saving a few quid and seeing Iron Man 3 in 2D, but if your local flea pit is only offering 3D -- or is reserving the really massive screens for 3D viewings -- then there's little harm in seeing Tony Stark blast baddies in one extra dimension.
Will you see Iron Man 3? What did you think of the last two? And if you've seen the movie, what did you think? Stick your own critique in the comments, or over on our Facebook wall.

Iron Man 3 looks good, and you can too with Become Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr is back in the armour in Iron Man 3 -- and this time you can get a turn as ol' shell-head too. An interactive game accompanies the release of Marvel's latest film, and I checked out a preview as new challenges and villains test Tony Stark's metal.

The last time we saw the ferrous philanthropist, he was learning to be a team player alongside Earth's -- well, Marvel's -- greatest heroes in Avengers Assemble. Now he's under threat from fresh villains, played by Guy Pierce and Ben Kingsley, but he also has a new trick up his metallic sleeve: the new Type 42 Iron Man suit, the sections of which he can remotely control to armour up anywhere -- and anyone.

That comes in handy in the preview I saw, in which Stark's world literally crumbles around him. But it's the quieter scene that follows the 'splosions which gives me real hope for Iron Man 3, as Tony licks his wounds with a perfect combination of Downey Jr's note-perfect performance and Shane Black's zippy dialogue.
You too can see what it feels like to be domed with chrome with Become Iron Man, an interactive installation thingy doing the rounds of major UK shopping centres in the week of the movie's release. It's an augmented reality affair like a giant Wii or PlayStation Move game: stand in front of the big screen and cameras register your movements as you zap on the Iron Man armour.

Once ensconced in the Iron Man suit, you fly around Tony Stark's garage using the suit's jets and shoot stuff with the palm-mounted repulsors. It's a fun way to get inside the armour, and at the end you can take away photos of yourself as Iron Man.

Here's where you can become Iron Man:
  • 29-30 March: Newcastle Metrocentre
  • 6-7 April: Birmingham Bullring
  • 13-14 April: Manchester Trafford Centre
  • 20-21 April: Sheffield Meadowhall
  • 24 April: Dundrum Town Centre
  • 27-28 April: London Westfield Shepherds Bush
Iron Man 3 armours up in cinemas on 25 April, in 3D or standard two dimensions. Are you looking forward to the latest adventure for the metal-coated Marvel multimillionaire? Cast your thoughts in the comments or on our heavy-metal Facebook page.

New Wolverine film gets slashy six-second Vine teaser trailer

The new Wolverine movie has been given a six-second airing, in what could be the briefest teaser trailer ever witnessed.

The lightning-pace clip, embedded below, shows the adamantium-clawed X-bloke slashing, grimacing and shouting his way through several seconds of action.

The trailer was posted to Vine, an app that lets you post six-second videos to Twitter or Facebook. Normally the app (which is only available on iOS) employs a smart phone camera to make the clips, so 20th Century Fox must have done some behind-the-scenes wrangling to get the trailer onto the service.

Although it's only a few precious moments long, the clip gives away some details concerning the film. As you may have guessed from the teaser, it's set in Japan, and will feature a return for actress Famke Janssen, who played Jean Grey in the other X-Men movies. The flick, which follows 2009's iffy X-Men Origins: Wolverine, will be set after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand.

Upon seeing the tiny trailer my colleague Nick Hide contentedly remarked that he no longer felt he needed to see the film itself, which raises the question of whether there's such a thing as a perfect trailer, or whether all pre-release clips spoil the experience of seeing a movie for the first time.

What do you think of the trailer? Are you excited about the film, or does it look like a heap of Jackman-scented hogwash? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.

Google Doodle Honors Earth Day

If you just woke up or even if you're heading out to work, take a moment to lean down and give good old Mother Earth a kiss; it is Earth Day, after all. Google's marking the day with a lively animated Google Doodle that almost completely obscures the search giant's brand name.

First celebrated more 40 years ago, Earth Day recognizes environmental awareness and, for some, action. Google's Doodle, which resides on its eponymous search page, doesn't look much like an Earth, but features vignettes of the globe's bounty. There are swimming fish, animals in caves, a rising and setting sun (and moon), flowers that bloom into the letter "G," clouds, rain and more. You can click to interact with the various areas, or simply watch it all play out over and over again. A click on Google's search icon will take you to a treasure trove of information about Earth Day.

For even more Earth goodness, you can check out the Google Earth blog, which features links to a variety of earth-related features including an exploration of the ocean floor, underwater Street View and Saving the Elephants.

Angry mob undresses woman and rip her clothing after she dressed provocatively

A group of men attacked a woman who was dressed in a mini skirt.

The men attacked the woman claiming that she was dressed inappropriately. The woman was spotted walking on the street in Kitengela, a town in Kenya.

The angry mob claimed the dress was too short. They argued with the woman to change into something more appropriate. When the woman ignored their request the men attacked her and undressed her.

The men then ripped her clothing apart so she could not put them back on, claiming that “it was better for her to go naked because her intentions were clear,” according to press reports in Kenya.

According to a witness, the crowd gathered around the woman and forcibly undressed her. Her clothes were torn and thrown away ensuring that she had nothing to cover her body as a punishment for dressing provocatively.

“Most women in the town of Kitengela, dress modestly, and everyone is expected to adhere to their standards,” Aminah Wangai, 62, from Kenya told YourJewishNews.com.

Many people gathered to watch as the drama unfolded.

The woman was left on the floor with nothing to cover her body.
A Good Samaritan who witnessed the incident offered the woman a long dress so she could go home.

The victim's mothers was warned not to let her daughter leave the house without her approval, according to press reports in Kenya.

Boston Marathon explosions: the clock at the finish showed 4:09:44... then the shockwave hit

From across the globe 27,000 runners had gathered on a cloudless New England spring day to take part in the world’s oldest annual marathon, but four hours after the start, while some runners were just yards from the finish line, chaos erupted.

It was Patriot’s Day, marking the first battles of the American Revolutionary War, a public holiday and a scene of celebration unfolded as 500,000 spectators including boisterous Red Sox baseball fans, created a party atmosphere.
The final mile of the course has been dedicated to victims of the Newtown school shooting and 26 seconds of silence were held to honour the 26 who died in that massacre as some of their families sat near the finish line.
Hundreds of thousands of spectators then reveled in watching Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa win a dramatic three-way sprint finish down Boylston Street to take the 117th running of America’s most prestigious marathon race in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 22 seconds.
Two hours later, as the festivities continued, fun runners of all ages were yards from the end cheered on by enthusiastic crowds as they passed a line of national flags. Some about to achieve the biggest athletic accomplishment of their lives.
Suddenly, as the clock at the finish showed 4:09:44, a shattering shock wave hit from their left. An elderly man running on the left side of the road was knocked sideways, his left leg and then his right, buckling under him, and sending him sprawling to the ground.

A runner in blue next to him grabbed his left ear as if hit by shrapnel. A woman behind covered her ears as the sound of the blast hit her. Others further away were sent reeling to the right and covered their ears, sprinting towards the finish line to get away.
Stewards and police officers bravely ran towards the grey cloud billowing skywards from the side of the course. “Oh my god,” one shouted. Another screamed: “There’s gonna be people hurt.”
Amid the sound of screaming they climbed over collapsed crash barriers to help injured spectators outside two restaurants, the Atlantic Fish and Forum, where a bloody scene of chaos unfolded. One woman was heard shouting “Where are my children?” amid the carnage.
Witnesses described a second explosion just seconds after the first.
Roupen Bastajian, 35, a state trooper from Rhode Island, had just finished the race when he heard the first blast.

He said: “I started running toward the blast. And there were people all over the floor. We started grabbing tourniquets and started tying legs. A lot of people amputated. At least 25 to 30 people have at least one leg missing, or an ankle missing, or two legs missing.”
Spectator Jeff Curtis who ran to help, and was close to tears, said: “People were banged up, severe lacerations, amputations, they were banged up everywhere.”

A nurse who treated the injured said: “Some of the injuries were very profound. One woman had lost her leg, lots of bleeding. Some children were involved as well.”
Beck Dnagler, a resident who was on the fifth-floor watching the race, said: “The first explosion was further up towards the line, you could only see the plume of smoke and then the immediate scatter, you could smell it, it smelled like a giant firecracker. Once that registered, there was another immediate blast. then there was immediate pandemonium.”

Maya Hauer, 23, who was at a party on the third floor of a building two doors down from where the first bomb exploded on Boylston Street. She said: “There was blood all over Boylston. And shattered glass everywhere.”

Boston Globe reporter Steve Silva said there was “blood everywhere, victims carried out on stretchers. I saw someone lose their leg, people are crying.”
Another witness Dave Weigel said: “I saw people’s legs blown off. Horrific. Two explosions. Runners were coming in and saw unspeakable horror.”
TV helicopter footage showed blood staining the pavement in the popular shopping and tourist area known as the Back Bay.

British runner Abi Griffiths said: “It was while I was getting my bag that I heard it go off. It’s a weird human instinct that you know it’s serious. People looked around, saying what’s that. It was very loud. People didn’t know what do do, they were wandering aimlessly.
“Suddenly it went into a state of chaos. We were being evacuated out of the area. What should be a major celebration of running 26 miles became a frightening scene.
“It felt like it came from inside a shop. Along the street, it’s lined with people, it’s packed, so it’s really the epicentre of crossing the finish line.”

The Boston Marathon dates back to 1897, when it first ran after inspiration from the 1896 Olympics event.
Dan Farnsworth, a runner from Utah, said: “I heard two loud thuds. The first one, I didn’t know what was going on. The second, I thought this isn’t good. Somebody’s leg flew by my head.”
One spectator told the Boston Herald. “I gave my belt to stop the blood.”

Runner Laura McLean from Toronto said she heard two explosions outside the medical tent. She said: “There are people who are really, really bloody. They were pulling them into the medical tent.”
One doctor in the tent, about 150 yards from the explosion said, “We all went running over there and started to bring people in, It was not good. Very bad. Like a war zone. 9/11 immediately came to mind.”

Terror Attack at Boston Marathon VIDEO Story

Multiple casualties are reported after at least two explosions rocked the area near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, according to the Boston Herald.

Witnesses reportedly heard booms that sounded like two claps of thunder near the finish line inside the Fairmount Copley Plaza Hotel. The explosions occurred just before 3 p.m. Video of the scene showed a number of emergency crews in the area tending to victims and blood on the ground near the finish line.

“I saw two explosions. The first one was beyond the finish line. I heard a loud bang and I saw smoke rising,” Boston Herald reporter Chris Cassidy, who was running in the marathon, told the newspaper. “I kept running and I heard behind me a loud bang. It looked like it was in a trash can or something…There are people who have been hit with debris, people with bloody foreheads.”

California - Touching GPS/Cell Phone Maps

Western state sets a controversial driver distraction precedent

In the land of electric vehicles and honey, aka the nation's most populous state, California, controversy is brewing over distracted driving.

The Appellate Division Superior Court for the County of Fresno, Calif. made a controversial driver distraction ruling [PDF] this week, when it stiffened its ban on in-car smartphone use, banning motorists from looking at maps on their mobile devices while driving.

California, like most states allows motorists to consult paper-maps while driving -- a distraction that's considered dangerous, but at times necessary to motorists. However, the exact same act on the a mobile device -- which arguably take less finger dexterity -- is verboten.

To be fair, the presiding Judge F. Brian Alvarez acknowledges that this cognitive dissonance between non-digital and digital uses exists in his ruling. However, he says that the 2008 law passed by California's state legislature and the follow-up 2012 hands-free bill are explicit -- no manual interaction with digital devices of any kind can be performed while driving.

He suggests that the Californian legislature review the issue and possibly modify the law.
The decision isn't entirely catastrophic to motorists; barring reversal from the legislature, the ruling still leaves drivers with some legal options. Drivers can use hands free smartphone navigation software (which many phones now come with), although interacting with the device other than by voice is strictly illegal. California also allows automated self-driving cars, although they are not yet widely commercially available.

And of course there's one other option for California's motorists -- a good old-fashioned map.

China reports fifth H7N9 bird flu death

A new strain of bird flu has claimed two more lives in China's business capital of Shanghai, taking the total number of human deaths attributed to the H7N9 virus to five, state media said Thursday.
Four of the deaths have occurred in the commercial hub, while the other was reported in the neighbouring province of Zhejiang on Wednesday.

Chinese authorities are trying to determine how exactly the new variety of bird flu infects people, but say there is no evidence yet of human-to-human transmission.
The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 14, including six from Shanghai, according to the official Xinhua news agency which cited health authorities.
The first two deaths occurred in February but were not reported by authorities until late March. Officials said the delay in announcing the results was because it took time to determine the cause of the illnesses.
A 48-year-old poultry transporter was among the latest two reported dead Thursday while the identity of the other person was not released. Both were said to have died a day earlier.
Authorities said none of the eight people whom the 48-year-old had close contact with had shown signs of infection.
The World Health Organisation on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of a pandemic because the sub-type is not thought to be transmitted from human to human, unlike the more common H5N1 strain.
But health experts have emphasised the need to quickly identify the source of the virus and its mode of transmission to reduce human exposure.
China's Ministry of Agriculture said Thursday the virus has been detected in pigeon samples collected at a marketplace in Shanghai, according to a Xinhua report, which did not define the nature of the samples.
After gene sequence analysis, the national avian flu reference laboratory found the strain of the virus in pigeons to be "highly congenetic with those found on persons infected with H7N9 virus".
The more common strain of bird flu, H5N1, killed more than 360 people globally from 2003 until March 12 this year, according to the WHO.
In another development, a man in the central province of Hunan died from H1N1 (swine) flu on Wednesday, Xinhua reported.
A 2009-2010 swine flu pandemic resulted in over 18,000 deaths worldwide, according to WHO estimates. But the strain, while highly contagious, is not thought to be more lethal than ordinary flu.

Website for American Forces in Korea Goes Dark

The United States Forces-Korea website was knocked offline early Tuesday morning by a hardware failure, Pentagon officials said.

Around 1 a.m. EDT, the site, which is managed by the Defense Department, showed up blank except for a message reading, "Network Error (gateway_error); An error occurred attempting to communicate with an HTTP or SOCKS gateway. The gateway may be temporarily unavailable, or there could be a network problem. For assistance, contact your network support team."

As of 2:30 p.m. the site was still out, at a time when many federal eyes are watching the Pacific area's physical and electronic assets closely. U.S. Forces-Korea is a shared headquarters that plans and prepares for sending combat forces to defeat adversaries in the peninsula region.

"Defense is aware that the U.S. Forces-Korea website — www.usfk.mil — is currently unavailable. Initial assessments indicate it is the result of a hardware failure. Communication specialists are diligently working to repair the problem to bring the site back online as soon as possible," Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Damien Pickart said.

For weeks, the North Korean government has been threatening its southern neighbor and the United States with talk of U.S.-bound missiles and plutonium production. The regime is widely accused of carrying out a cyber assault last month that froze South Korean networks supporting automatic teller machines and broadcast TV stations.

In response to Pyongyang’s aggressive oratory, the Pentagon this week moved a missile-tracking platform toward the Korean peninsula and dispatched a guided missile destroyer.
Recently, U.S. Cyber Command announced a reorganization that will produce 27 teams of combat mission forces to provide offensive planning, as well as defensive capabilities and options to geographical combatant commanders. CYBERCOM, which formed in 2010, also is creating 60 teams to defend dot-mil networks, including USFK.mil.

How to Get Facebook Home on April 12

Eager to try Facebook Home? You won't be able to do that today, but on April 12, you'll be able to download the software on three currently available smartphones that are supported by the new Facebook Home Android experience.
The most seamless way to get your hands on Facebook Home is to pick up HTC's new phone specifically created for it, the HTC First. It'll be available on April 12 for $99.99 with a two-year contract, exclusively from AT&T. It will have a 4.3-inch glass display, Android 4.1 Jellybean underneath, and will be available in four colors: black, white, light blue and red.

According to Zuckerberg, there will be four Android phones that will support an installation of Facebook Home from the Google Play Store, in addition to the preinstalled Facebook Home on the new HTC First. "At first we'll be supporting a few devices," Zuckerberg said, including the HTC One, HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung Galaxy S 4 (that will be in the future), and the Samsung Galaxy Note II.

"It'll be really simple," Zuckerberg said, talking about Facebook Home's installation routine. "After we launch, if you have the most recent Facebook app on Android or Messenger on Android, all you need to do is click 'install.' It takes you to the Google Play Store."
Zuckerberg said that when you launch this installer, Android will ask you if you'd like to try it once, or if you're sure you want to keep it, it offers the option of installing it permanently.

Hugh Hefner has bed over 1000 women

Hugh Hefner insists he has always been a faithful husband, but has still slept with over 1,000 women in his life.
Hugh Hefner has slept with "over a thousand" women.
The 86-year-old Playboy founder - who wed third wife Crystal Harris last December - insists he has always been faithful during his marriages, but "made up for it" when he was single.
Asked by the new edition of America's Esquire magazine how many women he has slept with, he said: "How could I possibly know? Over a thousand, I'm sure.
"There were chunks of my life when I was married, and when I was married I never cheated. But I made up for it when I wasn't married. You have to keep your hand in."
The media mogul - who was previously married to Mildred Williams from 1949 to 1959 and Kimberley Conrad, the mother of his sons, Marston, 22, and Cooper, 21, from 1989 to 2010 - is happier than ever with Crystal and feels "very fortunate" to have found love again so late in life.
Hugh - who has two other children, Christie and David, from his relationship with Mildred - said: "All our friends think it's made in heaven. It's only people who don't know us, who simply see us as stereotypes in terms of age and beauty.

"I just feel very, very fortunate to have found her at this stage in my life. I saved the best till last.
"I want the rest of my life to be very much like it is now. I want it to be like this."
The magazine magnate used to have multiple live-in girlfriends at the Playboy Mansion and his life with Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson was shown in reality TV series 'The Girls Next Door'.

Were the dinosaurs killed by a comet? Researchers says smaller, faster space rock sparked mass extinction

Study claims there's not enough debris to account for massive asteroid
For a smaller rock to cause such a huge crater it would have to be faster
Long-period comets hurtling in from outer space fit the bill, it is claimed

A computer generated picture imagines how it might have looked when a suspected asteroid struck the Yucatan peninsula 65million years ago. New research suggests that the impact may have been a comet
The extraterrestrial object that slammed into the Earth 65million years ago and sparked the extinction of the dinosaurs was most likely a speeding comet, new analysis claims.
New research has suggested that the 110 mile-wide Chicxulub crater in Yucatan, Mexico, was caused by the impact of a smaller object than previously thought.
But for a smaller object to have caused such a cataclysmic impact it must have been moving at speeds usually only reached by comets hurtling through our solar system from outer space.
It has hitherto been claimed that the the culprit was a large, relatively slow-moving asteroid, the disintegration of which left a global layer of sediments enriched in iridium.
But at the 44th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Woodlands, Texas, researchers from New Hampshire's Dartmouth College suggested that the amount of debris left by the collision indicates the object was much smaller.

Their research suggests frequently cited figures overstate the amount of iridium left behind by the impact, BBC News reports.
Comparison with quantities of osmium left behind by the impact led them to deduce that the collision left less debris on Earth than has previously been supposed - suggesting a much smaller body was involved.
But for a smaller space rock to have produced a crater the size of Chicxulub, it must have been travelling at speeds more consistent with a comet careering through our solar system from outer space.

Dr Jason Moore, from Dartmouth College, told BBC News: 'You'd need an asteroid of about 5km diameter to contribute that much iridium and osmium. But an asteroid that size would not make a 200km-diameter crater.'
'So we said: how do we get something that has enough energy to generate that size of crater, but has much less rocky material? That brings us to comets.'
Professor Mukul Sharma, also of Dartmouth College, added: 'You would need some special pleading for an asteroid moving very rapidly - although it is possible.
'But of the comets and asteroids we have looked at in the skies, the comets are the ones that are moving very rapidly.'
Thought to originate in the Oort cloud, a hypothesised spherical cloud of icy bodies in the outer Solar System, long period comets follow highly eccentric orbits around the Sun.

It is thought that gravitational perturbations caused by either the massive outer planets or passing stars periodically send them plunging towards inner Solar System at tremendous speeds.
The mass-extinction event 65million years ago that killed off 70 per cent of the world's species - most notably the dinosaurs - is now widely believed to have been caused by the impact at Chicxulub.
The impact would have caused some of the largest megatsunamis in Earth's history, as well as sending a cloud of super-heated ash and dust into the atmosphere.
Colossal shock waves would have triggered earthquakes and volcanic eruptions right the way across the planet.
Other researchers were cautious about the claims of the Dartmouth duo.
Dr Gareth Collins, who researches impact cratering at Imperial College London, expressed doubts as to whether geochemistry could be used to accurately determine the mass of the object which struck Chicxulub.
He suggested that some of the mass of the object could have landed close to the crater, or even been ejected from the Earth back out into space, skewing the results.
'The authors suggest that 75 per cent of the impactor mass is distributed globally, and hence arrive at quite a small-sized impactor, but in reality this fraction could be lower than 20 per cent,' he told BBC News.

THE EFFECT OF THE IMPACT

Whatever struck the Yucatan peninsula 65million years ago, the impact would have caused some of the largest megatsunamis in Earth's history.
As the impactor ploughed into our planet's crust a cloud of super-heated dust, ash and steam would have spewed from the impact site.
Excavated material, along with pieces of the impactor, ejected out of the atmosphere by the blast, would have been heated to incandescence upon re-entry, broiling the Earth's surface and igniting wildfires.
Colossal shock waves would have triggered earthquakes and volcanic eruptions across the entire world.
Dust and particles could have covered the entire surface of the Earth for several years, possibly a decade, making the environment harsh and inhospitable.
The shock production of carbon dioxide caused by the destruction of carbonate rocks would have led to a sudden greenhouse effect.
Over a longer period, sunlight would have been blocked from reaching the Earth's surface by the dust particles in the atmosphere, cooling the surface dramatically.
Photosynthesis by plants would also have been interrupted, affecting the entire food chain.

Gangnam, Justin Bieber and a finger-biting baby called Charlie power YouTube to a phenomenal one BILLION users every month

YouTube crossed the one billion threshold five months after Facebook reached that figure for the first time.
Most popular video ever on the site is South Korean rapper Psy's breakout hit Gangnam Style.
Google bought YouTube for $1.76billion in 2006 when the video site had an estimated 50 million users worldwide.

YouTube has powered to a phenomenal one billion users every single month thanks to hits by Psy and Justin Bieber - and the perennially funny Charlie bit my finger.
Gangnam Style by Psy is the video sharing site's most popular clip ever, with nearly 1.5billion views in total as the billion-user milestone was announced last night at an event in Santa Monica, California.
That makes the South Korean rapper's breakthrough hit nearly twice as popular as the second place clip, the music video for Justin Bieber and Ludacris's hit track Baby.

South Korean rapper Psy in his music video for the track Gangnam Style, which is far and away the most popular video on YouTube, the video-sharing website which has hit the one billion users a month mark.

Oooh, baby baby: Gangnam Style has been viewed nearly 1.5billion times on YouTube
The only clip in the top ten not promoting a recording industry artist was the perennially amusing Charlie Bit My Finger - again !, which was the sixth most watched of all time with nearly 520million views.

2. Justin Bieber

Baby, Canadian teen popper Justin Bieber's collaboration with southern U.S. rapper Ludacris, was the second most watched YouTube video of all time as the announcement was made.
No one artist had more than one video in the top ten and, other than the apparently universally appealing Gangnam Style, the only non-English language video was Brazilian folk singer Michel Teló's Ai Se Eu Te Pego!.
YouTube announced it had reached the billion users a month milestone at a swish event last night aimed at advertisers and featuring performances from some of the website's biggest stars.

3. Charlie bit my finger

Charlie bit my finger - again! The super-cute viral video featuring two young brothers was the only video in YouTube's all-time top ten that doesn't feature a music industry artist

It crossed the threshold five months after online social network Facebook said it had reached that figure for the first time.
The vast audience - up from 800million a month in October 2011 - has given YouTube's owner Google another lucrative channel for selling online ads beyond its dominant internet search engine.
Google snapped up YouTube for $1.76billion (£1.16billion) in 2006 when the video site had an estimated 50million users worldwide.

YouTube has since late 2011 refocused its site to prioritise watching along distinct channels of its creators. Such channels were seen as better allowing advertisers to focus on certain genres of content like beauty or music.
The company in 2012 ploughed $100million (£659million) into funding 96 channels to help them accelerate that growth, in many cases partnering with big-name Hollywood producers and directors.
Later, YouTube vowed to spend another $200million (£132million) marketing the channels to boost viewers.
But last night's event focused largely on stars who made it big through YouTube before the new channel-funding strategy, such as Michelle Phan, a video author who has been giving viewers make-up tips via the site since 2006.

YouTube vice-president Robert Kyncl, who is the company's global head of content partnernships, admitted after the event that the channel funding strategy had not worked as well as hoped.
Asked whether the channel funding investment had paid off, Mr Kyncl said: 'Every year we reserve the right to get smarter.'
While YouTube was committed to continuing to invest in content, he said, more of such investment in the future would go to those channels that had already proven they can be successful at building an audience on their own.
'What we're looking for is the acceleration of those who are figuring out how to retail their content,' he said.
